Encore Coffee – Happy Holidays Blend

Encore Coffee – Happy Holidays Blend

Thanksgiving is officially over, which means we can all start thinking about Christmas time.  Obviously there’s a huge amount of the population out there that thinks we have to start thinking about  Christmas as soon as the back to school items are all off of the shelves at Wal-Mart.  I don’t know about you, but I like to take things one holiday at a time.

Which leads me to todays blog post.  Last month, I shared with you my first experience with a newish roaster here in Kansas City called Encore Coffee.  If you haven’t had a chance to read about it, you need to check it out…right here!

Encore Coffee features a new coffee every month.  This months roast is their special Holiday Blend.  It’s a blend of some of the greatest coffees in the world.  You’ve got an Ethiopian Sidamo, an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, and a Costa Rican, all in one bag.  It’s literally an explosion of flavors in your coffee cup.  It will be available on Encore’s website beginning December 1st, and there’s a limited supply at the Made in KC shops for all you local.  So head over and grab a bag, trust me!

This is a mixture of natural, washed, and honey processed coffees.  I can’t say I’ve ever had a honey processed coffee before, so this one is new to me.  Now I know what you’re thinking, coffee that tastes like honey.  Not quite.  Honey processes coffee doesn’t get its name because it’s processed with honey.  In fact, there’s no honey used in processing this coffee.

Honey processed coffee is something that originated in Costa Rica.  It’s also referred to as a pulped-natural coffee.  It’s really just a semi washed coffee, which leaves some of the pulp on the beans.  The remaining pulp becomes sticky, like honey.  So there you go, no honey, just sticky beans.

Anyways, let’s talk about how good this coffee is.  Before I even open the bag, I like to give it a good sniff… I can’t tell you why, but this has always been a habit of mine.  The first thing I noticed was the very obvious scent of fresh blueberries from the Sidamo.  I can’t tell you what it was, but there was also a really sweet smell mixed in with it.  Maybe maple..

I recently purchased a Melitta pour over, so I decided to use it with this coffee.  I used a number 2 Melitta filter, and ground up 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of filtered water.  I don’t want to completely bore you with how I made this coffee though, so lets just talk about how good it was when it was ready.

This coffee was absolutely AMAZING!  It was truly a complex cup of coffee.  Right after brewing, I was tasting dark fruits, kind of like blueberries, and maybe even a hint of apricot, all mixed with a nice creamy chocolate.  Halfway through the cup, the flavor notes changed and I was tasting mostly milk chocolate, and cashews.  At the very end, I was getting a bright acidity, and the only way I can describe the flavors would be apricot and lemon.  Now you understand why I described this coffee as an explosion of flavors, SOO many different tasting notes throughout this one!

I really enjoyed this coffee from start to finish.  The complexity of it was incredible! I don’t think I’ve ever had a coffee that changed in flavor so many different times.  If you’re looking for a great coffee to impress your family and friends at your Christmas get together this year, you can’t go wrong with the Encore Holiday Blend.
